Basseterre, Saint Kitts, October 22, 2026 (SKNIS): Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Health, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing mental health needs across Saint Kitts and Nevis, highlighting ongoing efforts to expand professional counselling, strengthen school-based support and improve access to specialised services.
Speaking during the question-and-answer session at the Budget 2027 National Forum on October 20, Acting Prime Minister Dr. Hanley emphasised that mental health remains a priority, with attention being given to ensuring that individuals, children and families can access the support they need.
He pointed to the continued work of the National Counselling Centre, which provides professional and confidential services, and welcomed the return of a clinical psychologist serving within the unit.
The acting prime minister also highlighted the provision of guidance counsellors across all primary and secondary schools, noting that efforts are continuing to strengthen their training and improve the spaces in which they work.
Dr. Hanley encouraged persons experiencing mental health challenges to seek assistance, emphasising that support services are available through the relevant government ministries and professional networks.
He further outlined arrangements through which a Kittitian-born psychiatrist and psychologist based in the United States provides specialised assistance, including case consultations and virtual telehealth services, helping to extend access to professional care.
In addition, Dr. Hanley discussed efforts to strengthen support for children with specialised developmental and behavioural needs. He highlighted the introduction of a child behaviour specialist and ongoing arrangements to bring speech, behavioural and occupational therapy services to the Federation.
These initiatives reflect the government’s continued focus on strengthening the support system available to individuals and families, while improving access to professional care across communities and within the education system.
